How to choose lighting for an office or a study

Other interiors

Answer:

You need to see what you're working on, so choose your office lights carefully. If you work on a computer, you should see no light reflections on your screen.

As people tend to spend more and more time at work and the number of people working from home keeps growing, high-quality lighting for the office and study room becomes of great importance. What type of lighting to choose? A combination of a central light and a desk lamp.

Fluorescent lights are the best option

Do not underestimate the lighting in your office. Poor lighting solutions can cause headaches, burning eyes, and damage to your sight. The foundation for good illumination is a central light. The best option for an office is fluorescent lighting which lights up the whole room and prevents shadows that make your eyes hurt. Fluorescent lighting has the advantage of a long lifespan, dust resistance, low energy consumption, and colour temperature adjustability including warm white, daylight, and cool white colours. Daylight is the best choice for working as it boosts concentration and is gentle on the eyes. You can learn more about the colour of your light source by clicking here.

Today's modern fluorescent lights contain  electronic or magnetic ballasts, which ensure a rapid start without unpleasant flickering. The best option for offices with computers is  fluorescent lighting with parabolic aluminium grids. These spread the light evenly and prevent light reflections on computer screens.

A good lamp doesn't blind you

In addition to the central light, y our office also needs light for your desktop, particularly for working in the evening. Desks located next to a wall can use a pendant fluorescent light above the desk. But a much more common solution is a desk lamp. How to choose a suitable lamp for your office? To avoid getting blinded by the lamp, it should have an opaque shade, and the light bulb shouldn't protrude past the shade. Additionally, make sure your lamp is the right height. The edge of the lamp should be above eye level. Generally, the lamp should cast light from 4050 centimetres above at a 60 –70 degree angle

Working at a desk involves various activities (such as writing, reading, working on a computer, etc.), and each of them requires a different intensity of light. Choose an office lamp with a flexible arm to enable gradual tilt adjustment. A dimming feature also comes in very useful. To make writing at your desk more  comfortable, place the lamp on the opposite side from your dominant hand: left side of the desk for a right-hander, write side of the desk for a left-hander.

One final piece of advice: it's a good idea to keep another light on when working at your desk. The transition between bright light and darkness is tiring for your eyes.
