Brief description of MPPT regulators:
MPPT regulators adjust the current source-solar panel characteristic to be optimal for battery charging by means of an internal V-A converter.
Thus, they can utilize the energy from the solar panels better than PWM regulators that regulate charging only by pulse limiting the direct connection between the solar panel and the battery, where the pulse width is proportional to the state of the battery being charged.
In other words, the MPPT regulator can generate the ideal voltage and current for charging the battery from a higher voltage and lower current source.
For example, 18V/5A converts to 14.5V/6.2A.
The V-A conversion efficiency is usually above 95%, so losses are minimal and the regulators can usually be adapted to different types of batteries to provide the most optimal charging.
